The short version
Regional connectivity conversations tend to start with technology preference and end in disappointment. They work better in the opposite order: establish what is genuinely available at the address, then design around it.
The single biggest difference from metropolitan work is variability. Two businesses in the same town, a few streets apart, can have entirely different options. Coverage maps and general expectations about an area are a poor guide to a specific address.

Qualify the address, not the town
This is the step that saves the most trouble. Ask what is available at the exact premises, what would require construction, and what has previously been delivered to the site.
Where a fixed service requires construction, get the quote before making plans around it. Regional builds can be substantial, and knowing the figure early is what allows a business to weigh it against alternatives rather than discovering it after committing.

Test 5G properly before relying on it
Business 5G is frequently the practical answer for a regional site, and it is quick to deploy compared with anything requiring civil works.
The caveat is that coverage must be tested at the premises rather than assumed from a map. Signal at the front gate is not signal in a steel-clad workshop. Where coverage is marginal, an external antenna at height can make the difference between unusable and dependable, so test at the position an antenna would occupy.
Two further checks: whether performance holds up at busy times of day, since mobile networks are shared, and what the plan’s data arrangements are, because business use accumulates quickly.
Where satellite fits, and how Starlink changed it
Satellite used to be the option of last resort. Low-orbit services, Starlink chief among them, have changed that enough to make it a genuine first choice for sites nothing else reaches.
The difference is latency. Geostationary satellite — including NBN’s Sky Muster — sits far enough away that the round trip makes voice calls awkward and remote desktop work painful, however good the raw speed. Low-orbit constellations sit much closer, and the resulting latency is usually workable for cloud applications and often for voice.
Four things to check before relying on Starlink at a business site:
Sky view. It needs a genuinely clear view, and obstructions matter more than people expect. Trees on the northern side, a shed roof, or a neighbouring building can cause brief dropouts that are hard to diagnose later. Check the obstruction assessment properly at the intended mounting position rather than at ground level.
Inbound access. Consumer-grade satellite services commonly place customers behind carrier-grade NAT, which means no public IP address. That is fine for browsing, email and outbound cloud use, and a problem if you need to reach the site from outside — remote support, a site-to-site VPN, or viewing cameras remotely. Where that matters, check what the business plans offer before committing, or plan to reach the site through an outbound-initiated service instead.
Weather and obstruction dropouts. Heavy weather can cause short interruptions. For most business use that is tolerable; for a site where a dropped call is a lost sale, it argues for pairing satellite with something else.
Plan type. Business and priority plans differ from residential ones in how traffic is treated and what support is available. A site depending on the connection commercially should be on an appropriate plan rather than the cheapest one.
The practical consequence for design is unchanged: a site on satellite may be better served keeping some services local rather than depending on a remote connection for everything.
Two connections usually beat one
For most regional sites, the more valuable investment is diversity rather than speed.
A fixed service with 5G backup is a common and effective arrangement, because the two fail for different reasons. Where neither fixed line nor mobile coverage is dependable, Starlink paired with 5G — or with whatever fixed service exists — gives the same diversity through entirely separate infrastructure. A cable fault does not affect the mobile network, and a mobile outage does not affect the fixed line. Two services of the same type sharing the same infrastructure provide much less protection than they appear to.
The gateway should switch automatically. A backup connection that requires someone to intervene is not much use when the person who knows how is not on site. Size the backup for essential traffic — voice, payments, core applications — rather than for full capacity. Business internet failover and redundancy covers the design.
Share one good connection across a site
Where a property has several buildings — an office, a workshop, sheds, a yard — it is often far cheaper to bring one good connection to the best-served building and distribute it, rather than trying to connect each separately.
Point-to-point wireless links do this well over clear line of sight, and are covered in point-to-point wireless. This pattern is common on rural properties and industrial sites, and it turns a single viable connection into site-wide coverage.
Design for the outage, not just the connection
Regional sites are more exposed to power interruptions and longer restoration times, so the network design deserves attention beyond the service itself.
Worth considering: battery backup for the gateway, switch and any device that must stay up; a plan for what happens to phones when the site is unreachable, since most cloud platforms can redirect inbound calls to mobiles if configured in advance; and monitoring, so a failed backup link is noticed before the primary fails rather than during.
