On install day, we protect the work area, run cable along approved paths, terminate at both ends and label everything to a consistent scheme. Before we leave, every link is tested and a tidy patch is presented in your comms rack.

After handover, you get test reports and an as-built drawing so the cabling is easy to extend, troubleshoot or hand to another technician later.

Cabling outlives everything plugged into it

Switches, phones, access points and firewalls get replaced on their own cycles. The cable in the wall commonly stays for the life of the tenancy and beyond — fifteen to twenty-five years is normal.

That asymmetry should drive the decisions. Adding a few extra outlets during a fit-out costs very little while the ceiling is open and the trades are on site. Adding them afterwards means after-hours access, ceiling work, disruption and a second round of testing. We plan for what the space will need to support, not only what’s being plugged in on day one — additional access points, cameras, door readers and meeting-room systems all land on the cabling eventually.

Timing matters as much as specification

On a fit-out, cabling sits in a queue behind other trades and in front of everything the business depends on. Get the sequence wrong and it becomes the item holding up occupancy.

We coordinate around the build programme: cable paths confirmed before ceilings close, the comms room located sensibly relative to where the incoming service terminates, and power and ventilation sorted before equipment arrives. The internet service should be ordered the week the lease is signed, because it often has a longer lead time than the entire fit-out — internet lead times for a new tenancy covers that.

Labelling and documentation are the cheap part

A comms room that nobody can read costs money every time something changes. A desk move becomes an afternoon of cable tracing rather than a patch change; a fault starts with a tracer instead of a port number.

Labelling outlets to match patch panels, and patch panels to match switch ports, takes an hour on install day and saves that hour repeatedly for years. We hand over test results, labelling and an as-built drawing as standard. Registered cabling, done properly

Fixed cabling that connects to the telecommunications network must be installed by a cabler registered under the ACMA rules. That covers most permanent office cabling — the runs behind the wall, not the patch leads in the rack.

It matters beyond compliance. Poor termination, cable run alongside power, or a bend radius ignored during install will produce intermittent faults that look like network problems for years afterwards. Testing every link and providing the results is how you know the installation is sound rather than merely finished.
