Warehouse and Distribution Wi-Fi, CCTV and Access Control in Melbourne

Wi-Fi that reaches the end of every aisle, cameras across docks and yards, and access control for secure storage, installed with the cabling and internet behind them.

Last updated:

Kookaburra Comms installs warehouse and distribution networks and security in Melbourne and Victoria: Wi-Fi planned around racking for scanners and forklift terminals, CCTV across docks, yards and stock, access control with audit trails for secure storage, and internet with 5G failover. Regulated sites such as medicinal cannabis distributors get cameras and doors designed to their licence conditions.

Key facts

Common use cases

What's included

Wi-Fi that follows the racking

Scanners and forklift terminals have to stay connected while they move the length of the building, and racking full of stock blocks the signal. A design that worked in the empty warehouse can fall apart once the shelves fill.

We plan access points around the aisles and the stock, at mounting heights suited to high ceilings, with outdoor-rated units on docks and in yards. Roaming settings let handheld devices hand over between access points without dropping their session. In a large building, copper run lengths mean switching often sits in more than one place, linked back by fibre.

Cameras across docks, yards and stock

Warehouse CCTV covers more ground than an office system. That includes entries, loading docks, yards and fences, high-value stock and secure rooms, often around the clock and in poor light. Cameras at entries and docks are positioned to identify people and vehicles. Others give an overview.

Retention is decided first. Work out how long it usually takes to notice a loss, and what your insurer or licence requires, then size the storage to that. UniFi Protect suits many sites. A traditional NVR is the better fit for very long retention across many cameras or specialist camera types.

Secure storage and access control

Secure rooms, cages and vaults need more than a lock. Access control records who entered and when. Access can be limited to certain people at certain hours, and revoked the moment someone leaves. On UniFi, door events sit beside the camera footage, so checking an entry against the video is quick.

Each door still needs the right locking hardware, power with battery backup, and egress that meets fire requirements. Those decisions are made door by door.

Licensed and regulated distribution

Some distribution sites hold licences that come with security conditions. Medicinal cannabis distributors and other pharmaceutical storage sites are examples, and Kookaburra Comms has fitted out medicinal cannabis distribution sites.

The conditions vary by licence, so we start from the ones you’ve been given. We design camera coverage, recording, retention, access control and entry logs to meet them, and document exactly what was installed and how it’s configured. If a condition is unclear, confirm it with your regulator before the design is locked in. Changing camera positions or door hardware after installation costs far more.

Internet that keeps dispatch running

When the internet drops, a distribution site can’t scan, pick or dispatch. A fixed service with 5G failover keeps the site working, with the gateway switching automatically. In outer-suburban industrial areas, what’s available varies street by street, so we qualify the address across carriers and quote what the site can actually get.

Second buildings and yard offices

A separate building or a yard office needs to join the main network. Fibre is the best option where a cable path exists. Where trenching would be expensive or disruptive, a point-to-point wireless link is often the better answer.

Frequently asked questions

Why does our warehouse Wi-Fi drop out at the back of the aisles?
Usually because the access points were placed for the floor area rather than the racking. Full racking blocks and reflects the signal, so coverage that looked fine in an empty building falls away once stock arrives. The fix is a design around the aisles and roaming settings that let scanners hand over between access points, not more access points dropped in at random.
Can you design security for a licensed or regulated storage site?
Yes. Licensed sites, such as pharmaceutical and medicinal cannabis distributors, usually have security conditions attached to their licence. We design the cameras, recording, access control and entry logs to the conditions you've been given, and document what was installed. The conditions themselves come from your licence and regulator, so we work from them rather than guessing.
How long should warehouse CCTV footage be kept?
Long enough to cover how long it usually takes to discover a loss, plus any period your insurer or licence conditions require. Retention then decides the storage, because camera count, resolution and how much movement each camera sees all change how much space footage takes.
Can access control show who entered a secure room and when?
Yes. Each controlled door logs which credential opened it and when, and on UniFi the door events sit next to the camera footage in the same console. That makes it quick to check an entry against what the camera saw. Decide early how long those logs are kept and who can see them.
How do we connect a separate building or yard office to the network?
Fibre if a cable path exists or can be built economically. Where it can't, a point-to-point wireless link between the buildings is often cheaper than trenching and works well between buildings on the same site, provided there's a clear line of sight.
