UniFi Access: Door Entry on the Same Network

What UniFi Access does, what installing it actually involves, and when it is the right choice.

UniFi Access provides door entry managed from the same console as UniFi networking and cameras, using door controllers, readers and digital or card credentials with no per-door licence fees. A deployment involves more than the reader: locking hardware, power, egress and fire compliance all form part of the work, which is where an access project touches building trades as well as IT.

The short version

UniFi Access brings door entry onto the same platform as the network and cameras. One console shows who entered which door and when, alongside the camera footage and the network the readers run on.

For a business already using UniFi, that consolidation is the main attraction. There is no separate access control server, no second support arrangement, and no per-door licence fee.

The important caveat is that an access control project is not primarily an IT project. The reader on the wall is a small part of it. Locking hardware, power, egress and fire compliance make up most of the work, and those touch the building rather than the network.

What a door actually requires

A single controlled door typically involves:

The credential side — issuing cards, setting schedules, granting access to groups — is straightforward once the hardware is right. The hardware is where planning time goes.

Where it fits well

Sites already on UniFi. The cabling, PoE switching and console already exist. Adding doors extends a system the business already knows how to use.

Businesses that change staff regularly. Revoking a credential is instant and does not involve recovering a physical key or rekeying a lock. For sites that have lost track of how many keys exist, this alone often justifies the project.

Multi-tenancy or shared premises. Time-based access — contractors during business hours, cleaners in the evening — is simple to configure and easy to audit afterwards.

Sites that already have cameras. Door events and footage in the same interface make reviewing an incident considerably faster than correlating two systems by timestamp.

Where a standalone system may suit better

Complex or high-security requirements. Sites needing interlocks, mantraps, anti-passback, integration with intruder alarm systems or monitored duress should evaluate dedicated access control platforms.

Existing infrastructure worth keeping. A site with a functioning system and a large population of issued credentials may find migration costs outweigh the consolidation benefit.

Specific compliance obligations. Where retention of entry records, audit logging or reporting is prescribed, verify the platform meets the requirement explicitly.

Doors with unusual hardware. Heritage doors, heavy industrial doors, gates and boom gates may need hardware outside the standard range.

Cabling and power come first

Access hardware shares the same constraint as cameras and access points: it depends entirely on the physical layer being right.

Each door needs cabling to the controller, and the comms room needs space, power and PoE budget for the additional load. Where doors are being added to an existing site, the cabling path is often the constraint rather than the hardware — running a cable to a door in a finished building can be more involved than the entire configuration.

The practical implication is timing. If a site is being cabled for a fit-out, move or camera install, running door cabling at the same time costs a fraction of returning later, even if the doors will not be commissioned immediately. Office data cabling fit-outs covers that sequencing.

Fixed cabling must be installed by an ACMA registered cabler, and the same applies here.

Records, privacy and retention

Access control produces a log of who went where and when. That is a record about identifiable people, so it deserves the same deliberate treatment as camera footage.

Worth deciding before deployment: how long entry records are kept and why, who can view them, whether they are used for any purpose beyond security — timekeeping, for instance, changes the picture considerably — and how staff are informed.

Businesses with obligations under the Privacy Act should confirm how these records fit their existing handling practices. Being clear about it early avoids awkward questions later, and generally produces a tidier configuration.

Practical questions before you start

  1. Which doors genuinely need control? Not every door does. Perimeter and sensitive areas usually justify it; internal doors often do not.
  2. What is each door made of, and how does it lock now? This determines the hardware, and it varies door by door.
  3. Are any doors on an escape route? Egress and fire requirements take precedence over access rules.
  4. What credentials suit the people using them? Cards, fobs and mobile access each have trade-offs around cost, replacement and convenience.
  5. What happens in a power failure? Doors should fail in a defined state, and that decision belongs to the business, not the installer.
  6. Is there cabling to each door already? If not, this is the main cost driver.
