The short version
The choice between UniFi Protect and a traditional NVR is less about image quality than about how the system fits the rest of the site.
Protect makes most sense when cameras are being treated as part of the network. Same switching, same cabling standard, same console, one login. A traditional NVR makes most sense when the camera system has requirements of its own that the network platform does not serve.

Where Protect is the stronger option
The network is already UniFi, or will be. This is the deciding factor more often than any feature. If the site runs UniFi switching and Wi-Fi, adding cameras means extending an existing design rather than introducing a second system with its own recorder, software, credentials and support arrangement.
Licensing is predictable. There are no per-camera fees, so adding a camera is a hardware and cabling decision rather than a licensing one. For a growing site, that matters. It also makes a five-year cost comparison considerably simpler.
One place to look. When a camera goes offline, the same console shows the switch port it is connected to, whether PoE is being delivered, and whether the network path is healthy. On a split system that is three places to check and often two suppliers.
Cabling and PoE are shared. Cameras, access points and door readers can be powered from the same managed switches, which simplifies the comms room, the PoE budget and the documentation.
Where a traditional NVR still wins
Camera specifics. If the site needs a particular camera type — specialist optics, thermal, explosion-proof, ANPR with certified accuracy, or something that must match existing hardware — a multi-vendor system gives far more choice.
Integration. Where cameras must talk to alarm monitoring, point-of-sale, building management or a third-party analytics platform, a dedicated video management system generally has more mature integration paths.
Compliance and evidence handling. Businesses with formal obligations around retention periods, chain of custody, audit logging or export formats should confirm the platform meets them explicitly rather than assuming.
Long retention at scale. Very long retention across many cameras is a storage engineering problem. Systems designed for expandable storage arrays handle it more gracefully.
Mixed existing estate. A site with cameras from several vendors already installed may be better served by software that can adopt them than by replacing everything.
Storage is the decision that shapes the project
This is the part most often left until last, and it drives the hardware choice.
Retention depends on four things: how many cameras, at what resolution, at what frame rate, and how much movement they see. A car park camera watching an empty yard overnight records very differently from a camera over a busy entrance.
Decide the retention period the business actually needs first. Common drivers are insurance requirements, how long it typically takes to discover an incident, and any industry obligation. Then size storage to that figure with headroom, rather than buying a recorder and discovering the retention it delivers.
Two practical notes. Storage sizing should assume the busy case, not the quiet one. And recording drives are consumables — they are designed for continuous write and should be planned for replacement.
Privacy obligations apply either way
Recording people carries obligations regardless of platform. Australian businesses should consider what they are recording and why, whether signage adequately notifies people, how long footage is kept and why that period is justified, who can access it, and how requests for access are handled.
State surveillance devices legislation also applies and differs between jurisdictions, particularly around recording in areas where people expect privacy. The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner publishes guidance on surveillance and monitoring, and businesses with specific obligations should take their own advice rather than relying on a supplier’s assumption.
This is not a reason to avoid cameras. It is a reason to decide retention and access deliberately, which also happens to produce a better-designed system.
Cabling and power come first
Neither platform works without the physical layer. Cameras need cabling to the right places, switches with enough PoE budget for the whole load rather than the current count, and a comms room with space and ventilation for the recorder.
Fixed cabling in Australia must be installed by an ACMA registered cabler, and camera runs are no exception. Where a site is being cabled anyway — a fit-out, a move, a refresh — running camera cabling at the same time is dramatically cheaper than returning later. A practical way to choose
Work through these questions:
- Is the site on UniFi networking, or heading there? If yes, Protect starts ahead.
- Does any camera position need a specialist device? If yes, check availability before committing.
- What retention does the business actually need? Size storage to that, not to a product tier.
- Does anything need to integrate? Alarms, monitoring, analytics — confirm the path exists.
- Are there compliance obligations? If so, verify explicitly rather than assuming.
- Who supports it? One platform and one supplier is simpler when something fails.
If the answers point to a straightforward business site on a managed network, Protect is usually the more economical and more maintainable outcome. If several answers raise specialist requirements, a dedicated system earns its extra cost.
